A Note From Jill

I’ve taught Freshman Seminar for the past 4 years. Freshmen are my favorite students because they’re eager to explore new ways of seeing the world. Freshman Seminar provides new students with an opportunity to think outside the box and practice the art of articulation in both speech and writing in a fun, encouraging and non-threatening environment.
My academic background consists mostly of studies of Literature and the Environment or Ecological Criticism. I’m fascinated by our human role on the planet and how it relates to the animate world. I received my bachelor’s degree in English from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO in 2000 and my Masters in English from UM in 2006. You’ll find that many of the principles I studied permeate classroom discussions in Freshman Seminar since it is my belief that who we are depends largely on our unique life experiences.
I enjoy doing most anything outdoors but my favorite activities include skiing, soccer, trail running, camping, rafting, biking, traveling and gardening—all of which I do with my 2 year old son, Fischer and husband, Jay. My interests include sustainability concerns, organic farming, reading, writing and finishing the log cabin Jay and I have been building for the past 5 years.
I look forward to another exciting semester of Freshman Seminar!
A Note About Jill
Jill Demers is a recent English Literature UM alumni. Currently, she is spending this summer guiding raft trips on Rock Creek (one of MT’s premier fly fishing streams) and assisted with a log house build. Jill is both an organic gardener and an environmental advocate. Her toddler, Fischer, has kept Mom occupied long enough to deny Jill the time to update her blog. Maybe during his next nap? This will be Jill’s 4th year teaching Freshman Seminar and she will also instruct C&I 160: Learning Strategies for Higher Education both Fall and Spring semester.
